APNG, an extension of the PNG Image Format, allows for the animation of .PNG image files. It is a powerful replacement for the Animated GIF format, an antiquated filetype that only supports 256 colors and on/off transparency, resulting in rough edges that dont blend with the page background and grainy graphics. APNG's support full and partial transparency as well as all colors. Static PNG's have already largely replaced Static GIF's. Animated GIF's are long overdue for a replacent and Animated PNG's fulfill that need.
